The Dragon vs. Giants Waylay is a random encounter area in Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear.
This area can be randomly encountered when traveling between maps during Chapter Nine.
Details[]
This area consists of a section of woodlands where the player discovers a Young Green Dragon being menaced by a pair of Hill Giants. Upon spotting the party, the dragon pleads for aid against its giant assailants.
If M'Khiin Grubdoubler is present, she calls the giants cowards for attacking the dragon.
If somebody in your party is using equipment made of green Dragon Scales, you will not be able to have amiable relations with this young green dragon.
There are two possible outcomes:
Dragon Wins[]
If the dragon wins and the party did not attack it, in addition to the experience points and loot for slaying the Hill Giants, the young dragon will reward the party by telling them of an otherwise inaccessible secret cache in the northwestern part of this map. This contains a Diamond, a King's Tears, a Beljuril, 1,000 , and the Blood Red Ioun Stone.
If the party moves quickly, they can still attack the dragon before it leaves after telling them where to find the cache, which will grant them its combat experience points as well.
Giants Win[]
Upon slaying the dragon, the rest of the band - two more Hill Giants and a Hill Giant Leader - will arrive, and the whole hunting party will attack the player's party for "spoiling their meal."
This path offers more combat experience points, but forgoes the wealth that comes from helping the dragon. It also means trading the Ioun Stone for the magical halberd Cold Fury, which can be taken from the corpse of the Hill Giant Leader.
Giants Win, but then they lose[]
It is possible to get both the Dragon's cash and the Hill Giant's Leader's loot by targeting the Dragon with a Raise Dead (or similar) spell shortly before the Dragon dies from the Giants' blows (due to randomness of the fight a couple of healing spells to help the Giants may be needed, also do not attack the Dragon or it will become hostile in its next life). After the Dragon dies the Hill Giant Leader will spawn. Then the Dragon will be raised by the Player's Raise Dead and if the two original giants are killed while it is alive (caution - raised Dragon will have 1 HP), the hoard unlock dialogue will trigger. Reverse (resurrecting Giants and killing the Dragon after getting hoard unlock dialogue) does not work, resurrected giants do not call their leader. Of course, Raise Dead working on Dragons and Giants is a bug, it should not work on such creatures by the description.
Trivia[]
This encounter is based on a bit of AD&D lore from the Monstrous Manual, where hill giants are noted for considering the flesh of green dragons as a delicacy and organizing hunting parties to take them down.
