The Diviner, also known by his real name Haspur or the title The Fortune Teller,[1] is a seer who can be found in his tent in the marketplace which is located in the middle of the district of Central Baldur's Gate.
Once per day, for 50 , he is willing to answer a single question, that is if you're willing to shell out the gold.
“ | 50 gold! That's ridiculous, you can find some other chumps to squeeze money out of. | ” |
— Gorion's Ward |
His fortune telling includes business information and details about the city's high society, as well as life-saving knowledge about very private circumstances. Over the course of chapters Five and Seven, the Diviner turns out to be a reliable source of oftentimes unique information for each of his seven visions.
- Note: It doesn't suffice to visit him once per calendar day: twenty-four hours at a minimum must have passed to get his powers restored.
“ | I am for real. Now what is it that you wish to know? I must tell you, I only have the strength to answer a single question in a day, so be careful in what you ask. | ” |

A Seer's Vision[]
Questions about the leaders of the Iron Throne, the richest man in the city, or who framed Gorion's Ward for murder in the Candlekeep Library all lead to entries in your Journal's quest section under the title A Seer's Vision.
- When asked in chapter five who's the leader of the Iron Throne, he states, it's Rieltar Costak.[Bugs 1]
- When asked who's the leader of the Iron Throne or who framed Gorion's Ward for murder in chapter seven, he states, it's Sarevok Costak.[Bugs 1]
- He will provide the name of the wealthiest man in the city and the location of where he keeps all of his "hoard". (He does not see or reveal that it is difficult to break into and rob that house without bloodshed and a loss in reputation.)
Marek and Lothander[]
Once you have begun the Marek and Lothander quest and have encountered Lothander in the marketplace, if Gorion's Ward agrees to help Lothander escape his dilemma, he'll lead the party to the Diviner's tent where he will wait outside while the party goes inside to speak to the Diviner.
- Note: Though Lothander explains, this would be "where the Diviner stays during the day," he can be found in the tent at nighttime as well.
Since the Diviner is only able to answer one question per day, it is wise to choose the right one from the start, else Lothander will not be very happy about the "idiot" who doomed them all to die. The Diviner will reveal that only Jalantha Mistmyr in the Water Queen's House has the power to release Lothander from his geas.
Duke Eltan's Illness[]
The Diviner is able to see the reason behind Duke Eltan's illness, if he's paid for a vision during the investigations of this Chapter Seven quest, and points to his healer. If one has the necessary 50 gold to spare and trusts in Divination – information this clear can otherwise only be obtained via direct confrontation of the culprit.
“ | The man who claims to heal him is, in fact, the source of the problem. | ” |
Other, more general Visions[]
- He has a rather short statement on what the Iron Throne's agenda might be: "making money."
“ | I cannot answer any more questions, you must leave now. | ” |
Notes[]
- Despite his name, or rather title, he is not specialized in Divination. In fact, he has no spells in his spell book.
Bugs[]
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 The surnames "Anchev" and "Costak" are confused several times in the classic edition of Baldur's Gate. "Anchev" eventually became prevalent for Sarevok's lineage, while "Costak" was connected to Brunos.
