Though they have no access to cleric spells like other paladins do, Inquisitors may cast Dispel Magic at double strength via their special ability menu.

The Inquisitor's dispel magic innate ability is mechanically identical to the Dispel Magic (priest) spell. The only differences are the casting time and the scaling multiplier.

Description[]

A Dispel Magic spell removes magical effects upon anyone within the area. This includes effects given from spells, potions and certain magical items such as wands. It does not, however, affect enchanted magical items or spell protections such as Spell Turning and Spell Deflection. The chance of the dispel succeeding is determined by the level of the caster and the level of the magic being dispelled. The base chance of successfully dispelling is 50%. For every level that the caster of the Dispel Magic is above the original caster, his chance of success increases by 5%. For every level that the caster of Dispel Magic is below the original caster, his chance of success decreases by 10%. However, despite the difference in levels, there is always at least a 1% chance of success or failure. Thus, if a caster is 10 levels higher than the magic he is trying to dispel, there is only a 1% chance of failure. Similarly, if the caster is 4 levels lower than the magic he is trying to dispel, there is only a 10% chance of success. Intuitively, this spell is almost useless if the target is 5 or more levels higher than the caster.

Note: While this spell dispels the individual effects of Grease, Web, Stinking Cloud, and other such spells, it does not dispel the area of effect.

Gameplay[]

  • Has a casting speed of 1 (can be disrupted), but is cast at double the inquisitor's experience level, up to a maximum of 40 at lv20.
  • Is an innate ability with power level 0, and will thus bypass spell-level immunities from creatures such as liches or rakshasas. The ability is classified as an Abjuration school spell. The dispel effect will remove Melf's Minute Meteors from creatures who have them in their inventory.
  • Check out the gameplay section of the wizard spell for more details.

Mod content[]

The Sword Coast Stratagems offers a component that can rebalance the Inquisitors Dispel Magic ability, which is recognized as problematic for game challenge (overpowered) - as described from the Mod's readme:

Reduce the power of Inquisitors' Dispel Magic

Inquisitors have a very fast powerful Dispel Magic ability, which is cast at twice their level. In most bits of the game, this is usually much higher than the majority of spellcasting enemies. This component reduces the power of the Dispel a little; you can choose to use it at 1.5xlevel or at 1xlevel.
