Baldur's Gate Wiki

This Disintegrate Ray is a magical energy eye ray capability that is released exclusively by the Hive Mother.

Gameplay[]

The creature selects a single enemy creature that is in range and then releases a ray which speeds unerringly to strike the targeted creature. Assuming the eye ray wasn't blocked/deflected or bounced/reflected, the target creature is allowed a Saving throw versus Spell (with a -4 penalty) to resist it. A creature that succeeds with its saving throw will not be killed. If the save isn't successful, then the following effects occur:

  • A sound effect is heard.
  • The victim's sprite has a graphic "dusty" effect rendered upon it.
  • A Disintegrate effect kills the target, and depending on game settings, destroys most items.

A creature disintegrated is not revivable and is permanently dead.

This Disintegrate Ray is subject to Magic resistance, which can potentially block it.

A Spell protections type defense that has a capacity to absorb the ray's internal 6 Power level can deflect/turn it - for example with a Minor Spell Deflection, Shield of the Archons, or Spell Turning.

A Spell Immunity: Invocation will block this eye ray.

The Shield of Balduran can reflect the eye ray.

The Cloak of Mirroring blocks this ray, as it is of the offensive damage type, and in the original game it actually reflects it back at the Hive Mother.

A target that is protected against the Disintegrate effect, such as with an active Death Ward or similar will not be killed. Boosting save values by various means is another effective countermeasure.

The Sword Coast Stratagems mod (even if played with the Spell Revisions) revises this ray.

The revised ray inflicts 35d6 Magical damage to the target - however, a save vs. spells (with a -5 penalty) reduces the damage to 5d6.

The ray also exposes the victim to the Disintegrate effect, and a save vs. spells (with a -4 penalty) will negate it.

Also, unlike the vanilla game, with SCS there is another disintegrate ray (SPIN982) employed by the ordinary Beholder, Elder Orb and Death Tyrant - but this is only used depending on the player's game difficulty settings - typically Hardcore and Insane. This variety inflicts 15d6 magical damage, and a save vs. spells with a -5 penalty reduces it to 5d6 - it also applies the Disintegrate effect, but a save vs. spells with no penalty negates that effect.

SCS beholders (of all varieties) are immune to their own eye rays should they be reflected back at them.
