Baldur's Gate Wiki

Dings is a cat given to Gorion's Ward by Barad Ding after delivering the eight cats safely back to him, if s/he is a mage (including dual or multi-class mages) or sorcerer.

Description[]

Dings, as he is named, is a small tabby cat acquired from the wild mage Barad Ding. Dings alternates his time between sleeping and hunting for "presents" to deliver to you.

Gameplay[]

Perhaps the term Gameplay is being too generous for this cat, Dings. There is no play going to happen. Dings is not a creature file, but an item file, and will be in the backpack inventory.

Perhaps the purpose of this quirky item is to stimulate the protagonist to go back and try and return this cat to Barad. There are quite a few dialogue lines available for this subject.

Maybe when the PC agreed to take this cat while imagining of all the great things to do with it, like a familiar. Perhaps the cat could scout for the party, or steal small items? Alas, it's a Tabby cat that just sleeps mostly. And poops in the backpack.

If you remove the cat from the backpack, you can transfer it to other party members. You can also place it on the ground, and it appears not as a cat, but a small bag. You could even just place it in a random container if you like. It has no value so can't be sold - because according to the game it is a "critical item". The term critical seems to be subjective here.
