Baldur's Gate Wiki

The Diary of Carston's Apprentice is a scrap of pages penned by Apprentice (Carston).

Description[]

This looks to be the sole surviving piece of a torn diary:

I curse Carston daily for trapping me in this infernal place. My only solace comes from the knowledge that my old master is powerless to escape his own glass cage. I have hidden the crystal mallet to ensure no one will ever be able to use it six times to shatter the bell jar and release Carston. May he rot forever!

Gameplay[]

This item isn't just randomly found, it must be taken by force or guile from the Captain (githyanki WK) located in one of the rooms on the Watcher's Keep Githyanki Encampment, a sub map of the Watcher's Keep Machine of Lum the Mad area.

This item is placed in the captain's quick item slot, and this is eligible for a pick pocket skill attempt from a rogue, if desired.

Although, frankly, it might be more efficient to just slay the evil gith outright and recover it from its corpse.

The information in this diary scrap is the only legitimate way for the party to know how many strikes from the Crystal Mallet is needed to break the glass bubble that confines and shields Carston within the Machine of Lum the Mad.
