Detect Evil is a 1st level priest spell. It reveals whether creatures in an area are evil.

This spell is identical to the 2nd level wizard spell.

Description[]

This spell discovers emanations of evil from any creature. Any evil creature within the range of the spell will glow red briefly.

Gameplay[]

This spell is automatically directed over the caster, and when it is finished the spell's effects are applied to every creature in a 60-foot radius.

Creatures with evil alignment will briefly pulse with a red glow rendered on the creature's sprite.

Additionally, text is displayed identifying each creature (by name) who is evil.

Magic resistance can block this spell, as can a Minor Globe of Invulnerability or Spell Immuity: Divination.

A Non-Detection spell will not shield against Detect Evil.

Any information gleaned from this spell is up to the player to use as deemed necessary.

Within the game's plots and scenarios, the use of this spell has subjective benefit, and is never required in order to advance the game or solve a quest.

Notes[]

  • In the original saga, the list of evil creatures is provided for the whole map instead.
  • Paladin class and their kits (except Blackguard) acquire this spell as a special ability.  It has a decreased casting time of 1.

Bugs[]

  • The radius for this spell is listed as 30 ft. in-game; it is actually infinite (in the original saga) or 60 ft. (in the Enhanced Editions).

Trivia[]

The Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition priest spell Detect Evil has a myriad of rules and stipulations about how much information and to what degree the priest can gather from casting this spell.

The degree of evil (dim, faint, moderate, strong, or overwhelming) and possibly its general nature (expectant, malignant, gloating, etc.) can be noted. If the evil is overwhelming, the priest has a 10% chance per level of detecting its general bent (lawful, neutral, or chaotic).

The PnP spell is also reversible, allowing it to Detect Good as well.

This spell allows the priest to search out the feelings of all creatures within the current area. When affected by this spell, a target will briefly glow red if he’s evil, green if he’s good, and white if he’s neutral. Magic resistance does not affect this spell.
