Derrick is an elven Ranger that can be encountered during when exploring the Umar Hills area during the Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn campaign.

Gameplay[]

Derrick is positioned near the highest elevation of a natural stone stairway leading to Valygar's Cabin.

Derrick will challenge the party (if he can detect any player character). Reply to him as desired, but if it isn't to his liking, he'll shout the alarm and two other allies appear next to Derrick, and the whole group attacks the party - if the party has already been hired by the Cowled Wizards to hunt down Valygar - then it's likely Derrick could think the Ward might be lying depending on what is said by the party.

If for some reason Valygar Corthala is already a party companion, then the ranger's reaction will be friendly.

Otherwise, he'll say "Well, move on, then! Get out of here!", and Derrick departs the area jogging away into the forest, and never to be seen again.

If hostilities ensue, he will be joined by two other "Rangers" (VALRAN02.cre and 03.cre) - one is actually a Cleric with a Priest script including spell casting.

The other is a Ranger class who is mostly identical to Derrick, except for some very minor equipment differences.

Installation of Unfinished Business (Baldur's Gate II) mod will restore a few lines of dialogue, as well as the Boots of the West dropped by one of Derrick's accompanying help if they are made hostile. Additionally, the mod also restores Taragarth the Bloodbrand bastard sword to the Ranger Cabin.

Installation of the Sword Coast Stratagems Mod makes some minor changes to select creature scripts, and abilities. An SCS tactical Ranger script is supplied for more intelligent attack and defense behavior. Derrick now has 2-pips in Longbow and Long Sword weapon proficiency, and 2 pips in single-weapon fighting style. These adjustments slightly change the Ranger's THAC0, damage, weapon speed and Armor Class in melee. Derrick is scripted to be a missile firing combatant unless cornered in close quarters combat and then will engage in melee.

The Cleric "Ranger" will have an assigned "Smarter Priests" script, and open with a buff or two if combat begins. The Cleric will cast spells as able and if not disrupted and heal or try to cast disabling type priest spells, of which there is an assortment to go with in the script. The other Ranger will fight the same way as Derrick, with missile fire first and then in melee if you close on him. Random SCS treasure is placed on Derrick and the other two creature's inventory.

If the Spell Revisions mod is installed the Priest's spell casts will be the SR versions.
