The Demon Wraith is encountered in specific chamber as part of the Watcher's Keep Teleport Maze. It uses the "Wailing Virgin" sprite with a blur effect cosmetic overlay.

Aha! More mortal "adventurer" fools to add to my collection! Go, my slaves... gather the pretties for me!

Gameplay[]

The party first enters this chamber through a portal on the north side. The Demon Wraith will greet the party with a screen text message quoted above.

There are seven skeletal corpses on the main chamber floor that are related to an immediately formed group of Slave Wraith creatures, under the demon's command.

Additionally, there are several nasty traps in the area - one of which can be encountered with little movement forward, and all can be disarmed with the correct method and skill.

The Demon Wraith has many immunities and resistances. See the InfoBox for specifics.

The demon's main method of attack is via arcane magic spell casting, some of which are not interruptible.

It opens hostilities with instantly applied Improved Mantle and Spell Turning.

Most likely it will also cast a True Seeing to take down hostile illusions, although the creature can see invisible and hidden enemies by script even without it.

Should the demon be silenced, it will counter with a scripted Vocalize.

If any summoned creatures are detected, a Death Spell will be cast to banish them.

If the creature took damage a Contingency will fire with Protection From Magical Weapons - as long as the party has a member with greater than level 15 XP. At the same time a "Chain Contingency - Mislead" will auto cast a Mislead spell as well.

The creature has a Time Stop scripted, and if it triggers properly then several Symbol spells will be launched and perhaps a Wail of the Banshee as well.

Later in the fight, if the demon detects any party members with XP greater than 16, the creature will cast Disintegrate, Domination, Finger of Death (wizard) and Prismatic Spray at those nearest enemies.

After 30 game seconds, the demon will reevaluate and cast those same spells again until it is destroyed.

The demon can also engage in melee combat (and cast spells in the same round), but typically only if a PC is adjacent to the creature and also engaging it up close.

In melee combat, the wraith will have 4 attacks per round. Its touch attack can Level drain. The wraith receives a 4-point bonus to THAC0 and damage against party members who are elves.

Note that the wraith cannot evaluate the party's immunities, protections, or vulnerabilities. It will cast spells at targets that may be protected or immune. It cannot remove any protections or spells.

Mod content[]

This section is about unofficial content that is only available via fan-made mods.

The Sword Coast Stratagems mod makes several changes to this creature. First. it is now a 20 HD arcane casting mage with a Necromancer kit. A new "Smarter Mage" AI script is furnished as well, which revises the spells it can use, and selection of what spells it launches at self and valid targets. The AI will evaluate target protections and vulnerabilities as part of the scripted spell selection behavior.

The mod did not change its attributes or hit points, and it still has the same immunities and innate effects as the unmodified creature.

The demon has a spell book with 47 different spells available, and some have multiple uses. The creature also has a Minor Sequencer, Spell Sequencer and Spell Trigger prepared for instant release during the battle.

Expect Power Word, Blind more than once, Power Word, Kill, Mordenkainen's Sword, Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting, and plenty of AoE or single target disabling and direct damage spells of all types.

The creature can try and take down the party's protections with Remove Magic, Spell Thrust, Breach, and Ruby Ray of Reversal.

It is scripted that the demon wraith will attempt to arm itself with the Black Blade of Disaster.

If the SCS Icewind Dale spells component or the IWDification mod is installed, there will be several of those spells added to the mix as well.

If the Spell Revisions mod is installed, then non IWD spells will be the SR version.
