Baldur's Gate Wiki

The Deafness spell might cause the target to be unable to hear.

Description[]

The Deafness spell causes the recipient to become totally unable to hear any sounds. The victim is allowed a Saving Throw vs. Spell to negate the effect. Deafened spellcasters have a 50% chance to miscast any spells. This deafness can be done away with by means of a Dispel Magic spell or a Cure Disease spell.

Gameplay[]

The caster selects a single-target to direct this spell towards.

It has a listed range of 180 feet, however, in a practical sense it requires that the caster can identify a target, so the "real range" is limited to how far the caster can actually see.

When the spell is cast a projectile travels to the target creature and then requires a Saving throw versus Spell to negate its potential effects.

If the saving throw is failed, the victim is under a Deafness effect permanently, or until removed/cured.

The affected creature will show a brief lighting effect render on the target sprite, and a sound effect will audible.

A player character affected by this spell will display a "Deaf" icon (No. 112) on their portrait.

It is notable that this spell bypasses magic resistance of enemies, however a Minor Globe of Invulnerability, Minor Spell Deflection or Spell Immunity: Illusion can block it.

Mod content[]

This section is about unofficial content that is only available via fan-made mods.

Spell Revisions mod has changed this arcane spell, revising its title, effects, duration, saving throw, area of effect, and school. See below for description:
Sound Burst
Level: 2
School: Evocation
Range: Long
Duration: 1 turn
Casting Time: 2
Area of Effect: Target, and enemies within 10’
Saving Throw: Breath partial

This spell blasts an area with a tremendous cacophony. Enemies within the area suffer 4d4 points of crushing damage and are deafened for 1 turn. A successful save vs. breath at -2 penalty halves the damage and negates the deafness. Deafened spellcasters have a 50% chance to miscast any spell. This deafness can be done away with by means of a Dispel Magic spell or a Cure Disease spell.
