Conster is a 16th level mage who is a loyal servant of the red dragon Firkraag. He is found with the dragon in the dragon's lair in the Windspear Hills. He will be fought either solo in the holding cells room in Firkraag's Maze, or in a rushed encounter with Firkraag.

Come then, fool, and let me prove my worth to the beast I serve!

Gameplay[]

Firkraag and his mage Conster face the party side by side the first time Gorion's Ward visits the dragon's hideout. Conster will not speak before his master does.

Through various dialogue choices with Firkraag, the party may eventually make it clear to the dragon that they cannot leave without Garren Windspear's child (who is still upstairs locked in a cell). Firkraag, does not at the moment, wish to kill the party and is willing to let the party live their life. He warns the party though:

"Perhaps your demands are better sated with the rescue of Garren's child. Yes, perhaps that would better suit your needs. The child has proven no more interesting than its father. I had finished taunting him some years ago, really. It was only your arrival that brought him into this. Here, rescue the child from my servant and feel fulfilled. Do not think it will be easy. I test my subjects thus all the time, and they know that failure is death. Conster! Go to the child! If <CHARNAME> fails to take it from you, kill it."

Conster speaks a line of dialogue, and teleports back upstairs. He'll be ready for the party when they come back to rescue the child.

On the other hand, if the party attacks either Conster or Firkraag himself within the dragon's hideout - then both the mage and dragon will immediately go hostile and attack the party as well. From a game challenge standpoint, this is the most difficult scenario since the party will face two opponents at the same time, instead only the one. If the party set out to destroy Firkraag, then this can be done without regret - in fact it will achieve all the party's goals. That is, unless the PC is a Paladin and will be pursuing the Paladin Stronghold Duties, and then the optimal time to attack Firkraag may be later.

Conster will apply a battery of instantly cast spells at the start of conflict (uninterruptible). These include Minor Spell Turning, Protection From Normal Missiles, Protection From Normal Weapons, Spell Immunity Invocation, Mislead and a Stoneskin (from his ring). His next spell application will be Mantle.

After that the mage will recognize spell caster classes and could try to take out that target with a combined Ruby Ray of Reversal and a Maze a few game tics later.

A Finger of Death (wizard) is scripted for use at the third nearest enemy.

The second nearest enemy to Conster will be targeted with a combination Greater Malison and Flesh to Stone. If summoned creatures are spotted by Conster he'll attempt another combination cast with Delayed Blast Fireball and Mirror Image.

A Finger of Death (wizard) is scripted for use at the third nearest enemy.

A Spell Turning will be attempted for self protection, as well as another Stoneskin if the previous is down to 1 skin.

And further direct attack and disabling spells are potentially possible such as Chain Lightning, Fireball, Lightning Bolt, Magic Missile and Melf's Acid Arrow.

If defeated, on his corpse you will find an item of well-off random treasure, 25 gp and the key that unlocks the cell holding the captive child of Garren Windspear (either Iltha or Taar).

Installation of the Sword Coast Stratagems mod makes some changes to Conster, especially if the "Smarter Mage" component is installed. The mage is still a conjurer, but has a revised spell book with many different memorized spells, and more conjuration variety.

In battle, Conster will apply a series of buffs (previously cast) to include: Mirror Image, Shadow Door, Minor Globe of Invulnerability, Spell Turning, Spell Immunity Invocation (or "Dispelling Screen" with SR Mod), Shield, Protection From Normal Missiles, Protection From Cold, Stoneskin, and Non-Detection. Also added to the group will be a conjured Invisible Stalker.

Afterwards the SCS AI script will conduct threat recognition and opponent vulnerability assessments. This guides the offensive and other spells cast next. Conster can remove magical defenses with Breach and Khelben's Warding Whip. If enemy summoned creatures are detected, a Death Spell can be cast.

A prepared Minor Sequencer, Spell Sequencer and Spell Trigger are ready to deploy during the battle, near instantly.

As a conjurer, Conster has a good number of summoning spells to add allies to attack the party, including a Djinni, Fire and Air Elementals, and some high-level creatures. The mage has some random SCS potions for consumption during battle to heal or boost abilities and is scripted to quaff them.

With the Spell Revisions all the mages spell will be the SR versions. Summoned/conjured creatures will have the SR stats and abilities, but combined with SCS will also have improved AI scripts (like the spell casting Djinni)
