The Confusion spell clouds the judgement of creatures, instilling profound indecision and the inability to act reasonably.
Description[]
“ | This spell causes confusion in one or more creatures within the area, creating indecision and the inability to take effective action. All creatures within the area of effect are allowed Saving Throws vs. Spell with a -2 penalty. Those successfully saving are unaffected by the spell. Those who fail their Saving Throws will either go berserk, stand confused, or wander about for the duration of the spell. The spell lasts for 1 round for every two levels of the caster. Wandering creatures move as far from the caster as possible according to their most typical mode of movement (characters walk, fish swim, bats fly, etc.). Any confused creature that is attacked perceives the attacker as an enemy and acts according to its basic nature. |

Gameplay[]
Despite not saying so in the spell description, this spell only affects enemy creatures and won't affect neutral creatures either.
The spell's description gives the area of effect as 15-feet radius, and that's pretty accurate, the same as a fireball or greater malison spell.
The caster uses the targeting cursor to designate a point location on the area map to launch this spell toward.
When the casting is finished, a sparkling projectile speeds to the designated targeting point, and then quickly spreads to enemy creatures in the radius area of effect, exposing them to the enchantment.
The enchantment exposes each enemy creature to a Confused status effect requiring a Saving throw versus Spells with a 2-point penalty to negate.
Failing the save results in a text display on the combat log reading "Confused" and a 3D effect (a ring of intertwined birds) as well as a brief color fade effect rendered on the creature's sprite.
A player character failing their save will have an icon displayed on their portrait (No. 3) titled "Confused".
A confused creature's script is disabled and replaced by the confused state which means it can't differentiate between friend and foe.
They'll randomly alternate between standing still, walking randomly, or attacking the nearest person regardless of whether it is friend or foe. If they attack an ally, that ally will retaliate unless you disable AI.
Attacking a creature in this state will make the creature reciprocate and attack in return.
A player character made confused can't be controlled or even selected, and the inventory is also out of bounds.
The Confusion spell can be blocked by Magic resistance, Spell Immunity: Enchantment and a Globe of Invulnerability.

Notes[]
One version of Hexxat's Amulet also provides immunity. This is the version that she is wearing in "bat form". The actual item she is wearing at the time is transformed[1][2]to this extra powerful version to prevent any attack from succeeding, so she gets safely to the coffin. Upon being restored from being not-really-dead, the item is transformed back[3] into the original amulet.
Removal[]
Ongoing confusion can be removed by Dispel Magic, Greater Restoration, Exaltation, the Shaman spell Spiritual Clarity, or the Bard-exclusive item Tangled Strings.

Trivia[]
The Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition ruleset spell Confusion includes some additional saving throw checks, and they are modified by Wisdom scores. The spell also has a random limit to how many creatures can be affected based on a 1d4 plus the caster's level.
The spell lasts for two rounds plus one round for each level of the caster. Those who fail are checked by the DM for actions each round for the duration of the spell, or until the “wander away for the duration of the spell” result occurs. Wandering creatures move as far from the caster as possible, according to their most typical mode of movement (characters walk, fish swim, bats fly, etc.). Saving throws and actions are checked at the beginning of each round.
Any confused creature that is attacked perceives the attacker as an enemy and acts according to its basic nature.
