Cloak of Fear is a 4th level priest spell that creates a momentary aura of fear around the caster.
Description[]
“ | Cloak of Fear empowers the caster to radiate a personal aura of fear out to a 15-ft. radius. All other characters and creatures within this aura must roll a successful Saving Throw vs. Spell or run away in panic for 4 rounds. Party members are immune to the effects, although the aura of fear may still disturb them. | ” |
Gameplay[]
This spell is applied to the caster only.
When the spell is finished, A text displays reading <CASTER>: Cloak of Fear, as well as a unique 3D effect graphic rendered upon the caster, and a sparkling magenta projectile radiates from the caster's sprite in all directions.
Enemy creatures within the 15-feet radius AoE of the caster are exposed to an instantaneous one-time potential Panic status effect.
A Saving throw is allowed versus Spell to resist the panic.
If the save is failed, the affected enemy creature will have a brief fade from color effect rendered on their sprite, indicating the spell wasn't resisted - and they will now have a yellow circle around their sprite and run around the map uncontrollably panicked for the spell's 4-round duration.
A sound effect will audible when the spell's duration expires on an enemy creature.
A player character affected by this spell will show an icon (No. 36) titled as "Panic" on their portrait for the spell's duration.
This spell can potentially be blocked by Magic resistance.
A Spell Immunity: Conjuration will negate it as will a Globe of Invulnerability.
Any applicable Dispel Magic effect can remove the panic effect from an affected creature.
The spell is flagged as a "Hostile" spell but its fear radiating power doesn't illicit a reaction from innocent/neutral creatures, because the spell projectile only targets enemies.
Notes[]
Compared to the 2nd level wizard spell Horror, Cloak of Fear has shorter range (self vs. 40 ft.), slower casting (6 vs 2), and shorter duration of effect (4 vs 10 rounds). The only advantage is that it can bypass Minor Globe as it's a 4th-level spell.

Trivia[]
The Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition ruleset has no spell individually listed as Cloak of Fear - however the Cloak of Bravery spell has a reversible aspect that can apply the Cloak of Fear instead.
In the PnP version the cloak can be applied to one creature (not just self) and may last up to 8-hours - it affects creatures within 3-feet of the recipient (including allies), although a saving throw is allowed, or they will flee in panic for 2d8 rounds. It won't affect the undead.
The BG video game spell version has no duration, undead aren't automatically immune, and only hostile enemies are affected.
