Chaotic Commands is a 5th level priest spell that renders the target creature immune to magical commands, and much more.
Description[]
“ | Chaotic Commands renders a creature immune to magical commands. Suggestion, Charm, Domination, Command, Sleep, Maze, and Confusion are all spells that fit into this category. Gameplay[]
The caster applies this spell to a single creature or self - select the recipient using the targeting cursor.
Upon completion of the spell casting, a sparkling projectile speeds to the spell's recipient and bestows the spell's effects - a text will display <RECIPIENT>: Chaotic Commands.
The spell recipient will show a special 3D graphic effect upon their sprite.
A player character will also show an icon (No. 52) on their portrait titled "Mind Shield" for the spell's duration.
This spell confers a wide array of blanket immunities to disabling status effects and a few specific spells as well, including:
- Charmed
- Confused
- Feeblemindedness
- Held
- Paralyze
- Stun
- Unconsciousness / sleep
- The Wizard spell Maze
- The Psionic Ability Psionic Maze
The Chaotic Commands spell ensures that the immunities listed above should also provide corresponding prevention of associated portrait icons, and text strings that are introduced by these effects.
This spell can potentially be removed by any applicable Dispel Magic effect, as well as a Breach spell.
Notes[]
- The spell protects against equivalent effects with different names, such as Chaos, Rigid Thinking, Domination, Dire Charm etc.
- It will not cure any status effects; it must be cast as a preventive measure.
- It doesn't protect against panic / fear /moral failure.
- It also does nothing against effects that don't target the mind, like web or entangle. Those would require Free Action to defend against.
- Chaotic Commands is especially effective against mind flayers, protecting against their Psionic Blast, and Psionic Domination abilities. It does not protect against their intelligence draining "Devour Brain" however.

Trivia[]
The Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition spell Chaotic Commands renders a creature immune to magical commands Taunt, forget, suggestion, domination, geas, demand, succor, command, enthrall, quest, exaction, and other spells that place a direct verbal command upon a single individual automatically fail.
In addition, anyone casting one of these spells on a creature protected by chaotic commands must save vs. spell. Failure means that the caster must obey his own magic; the spell's effect has backfired on the caster.
The BG video game spell version took a significant departure in its design, for instance, it didn't implement the protective backfire on caster mechanic.
It also went much further than the PnP spell's limits in terms of its broad protections, many of which are not defined as a verbal magical commands at all, such as blanket protection from Stun, Unconsciousness, some Psionics, Maze, Confusion and others.
