Baldur's Gate Wiki

Category for all creatures of the class tanar'ri, based on CLASS.ids (TANARI – 160).

Note: Manual addition of this category to any article is not recommended, as a properly filled infobox will automatically categorize it. Set the infobox's parameter class to "Tanar'ri" instead.

Note:Despite its name, this category covers Demons in general, not only Tanar’ri. See Technical Details.

Demons are too varied to be meaningfully described as a single race. They appear in countless forms—some vast and terrible, others small and twisted—but all share the same essence: they are manifestations of Chaotic Evil, born from the roiling depths of the Abyss and driven by pure destruction and malice.

The Abyss is said to be infinite, and so, perhaps, are the legions of demons it spawns. Were they not perpetually consumed by their own internecine wars and by the eternal struggle against their arch-enemies, the devils of the Nine Hells, they would long since have overrun the Prime Material and every other plane within reach. This endless struggle—known as the Blood War—devours uncounted fiends with every passing day and has raged since the dawn of time.

Technical Details[]

The Infinity Engine that the Baldur’s Gate series runs on assigns both devils and demons the race “Demonic.”

(This can be directly observed by players in one instance only: when selecting a Racial Enemy for Ranger characters.)

To distinguish between the two, devils are given the class “Imp,” whereas demons use “Tanar’ri.”

This distinction is internal and not normally visible to players.

Trivia[]

  • Most demons encountered on the Prime—or in the Baldur’s Gate series—are Tanar’ri, the dominant breed of the Abyss.
  • Demons are not merely opposed to goodness and order; they are wholly incompatible with them. A demon donning a Helmet of Opposite Alignment and coming under its effects would be immediately and explosively annihilated.
