Carsomyr, also known as The Holy Avenger, is a powerful two-handed sword which can only be wielded by non-evil aligned paladins. This limits the use of the weapon to a paladin Gorion's Ward, Keldorn, or those with access to Use Any Item.

Carsomyr +5[]

Acquisition[]

In Shadows of Amn, it can be obtained by slaying the red dragon Firkraag in Firkraag's Hideout.

Description[]

Carsomyr is a weapon of legend, perhaps one of the most powerful blades ever forged on Faerûn, though its origin and history is thought purposefully forgotten so that the sword itself shall never overshadow the importance of the struggles that must be fought today. It is infused with the very essence of virtue, and requires as much from any Paladin that would hope to wield it. The evils of the realms must truly stand aside when this weapon is brought to bear, their magic dispelled with a word, steadfastly resisted with ease. Carsomyr also harbors a special distaste for the forces of evil and chaos, and such creatures must fear additional damage from its touch in battle.

Gameplay[]

The on-hit dispel effect is coded as a Wizard spell and will summon the Cowled Wizards while in Athkatla. The daily use charge ability is of the priest type though and won't attract their attention.

The on-hit dispel magic effect works as described. The daily use dispel magic charges don't work as described. See the "Bugs" section below.

The level 30 dispel magic on-hit effect will not trigger if the weapon is made ineffective because the target is protected from being struck - for example by Protection From Magical Weapons. Note that a Stoneskin won't prevent the on-hit dispel effect.

The Magic resistance bestowed by Carsomyr is coded to provide the wielder with a flat value modifier, not a cumulative value modifier.

The practical in-game effect of this not transparent to the player. There are some effects that can add onto the weapon's flat value, such as certain bard songs. Equipping another item that provides magic resistance can also add onto the flat value, but the player may have to equip the item before the sword, or even afterwards to have the cumulative MR values take effect and display on the character record properly.

Some examples of the interactions found with this set value mechanic are given below:

Keldorn has Carsomyr equipped, and quaffs a Potion of Magic Protection = MR is 100%.
Keldorn has already quaffed a Potion of Magic protection and then equips Carsomyr = MR is 100%.
Keldorn has the Ring of Gaxx equipped, and then equips Carsomyr = MR is 50%.
Keldorn has Carsomyr equipped and then adds the Ring of Gaax = MR is 60%.
Keldorn is wearing the Cloak of Balduran and Amulet of Seldarine = MR is 35%. He then equips Carsomyr = MR is 50%
Keldorn has the sword equipped. A mage casts Lower Resistance from a scroll upon him. MR is 30%. He then reequips Carsomyr = MR is 30%

Bugs[]

Although this weapon's description claims that its castable Dispel Magic (SPPR303) ability is cast at level 15, it actually doesn't work as written. Instead, the casting level is determined by and scales with the wielder's divine caster level.

If the wielder has no divine spell casting levels by virtue of its assigned class - then the dispel magic cast from the sword will be the lowest divine casting level - which is level 1.

On tests with a level 30 Thief (with Use Any Item) and a level 30 paladin, the thief was unable to dispel a level 8 bard's Mirror Image using this weapon's Dispel Magic (priest), whereas the paladin was able to do it consistently.

Carsomyr +6[]

Acquisition[]

In Throne of Bhaal, Cespenar can upgrade Carsomyr +5 to its +6 version if the protagonist is willing to use the Eye of Tyr and spend 5,000gp.

Even a Holy Relic as powerful as Carsomyr is made even greater when combined with the Eye of Tyr.
