Carras is a smuggler working under Esamon, also known as Saemon Havarian, in Amkethran. He is also a "shop keeper", and will open a store function, available for only one visit to the cave. Side Note: Apparently, based on the accents of Esamon and Carras, there is a part of the Faerûn which is similar to Australia.
The first time in Baldur's Gate II Chapter 8 when you enter the Smuggler's Cave in Amkethran, you will see some of Balthazar's monks shutting the smugglers' business down. Regardless of whether you help the smugglers or not, you can trade with Carras, although you can only do it once.
If you don't enter the cave in Chapter 8, you will have missed your chance, even if you go in the Smuggler's Cave in Chapter 9. For a more detailed look at the first encounter of Carras and the Monks visit the Smuggler's Cave area article.
Gameplay[]
Carras has an adjusted pickpocketing score of 125% - which will make it tougher for a party member to steal from him.
If attacked by the party - Carras will initially force cast Mass Invisibility and Haste.
If able, he'll attempt a Protection From Normal Weapons, then cast a Horror, Hold Person (wizard), Carrion Summons, and a Shadow Door.
Note that this smuggler has an innate 63% Magic resistance.
The items in his quick slots (Enkidu's Full Plate/K'logarath) are flagged as unstealable, but can be dropped upon death. The same applies to the Gargoyle Boots he wears. Carras is scripted to use his bow and arrow attacks over melee fighting.
Discount (exploit)[]
Baldur's Gate II:
Throne of Bhaal (2001)
This icon indicates content from the original Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal campaign. Helping the smugglers will make Carras give you a discount. He then will sell for only 99% of the regular item value (opposed to 140% without discount) and buy items for a rate of 80% of their value (30% without discount). With high reputation and Charisma this can lead to a situation where a unique, high valued item, e.g. Enkidu's Full Plate from his own stock, can be sold back to him for more coin than it originally cost when buying – effectively letting Gorion's Ward gain coin through trade, here.
Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition – Throne of Bhaal (2013)
This icon indicates content from the Throne of Bhaal campaign of the Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition. This exploit no longer works in the enhanced edition, since the buy markup is set to 30%.
Mod content[]
- This section is about unofficial content that is only available via fan-made mods.
Installation of the Rogue Rebalancing Mod addresses an oddity. Dialogue in the game suggests that the smugglers buy and sell stolen goods, however the unmodded game does not allow them to behave as a fence. The Mod changes this (it is the only fence available in ToB). The shop's inventory is modified slightly to include some Mod specific items.
The Sword Coast Stratagems mod assigns a different smarter mage script to Carras. He gets a fully populated spell book commensurate with his mage XP level, and will initialize different spells for protection, such as Shadow Door, Minor Globe of Invulnerability, SI Divination (or Dispelling Screen with Spell Revisions), Non-Detection, Protection From Magical Weapons, Spell Deflection, Stoneskin and others.
He can try a few spell removals and a Breach.
Expect a Mordenkainen's Sword to assist him in battle. A Spell Sequencer with a triple Dire Charm can be instantly launched, and a minor sequencer as well.
