Bucklers — so called because they can be "buckled" to the forearm — are the smallest shields available, usually made from wood or metal. They can be use by many classes, except Mages, Monks, Kensai. These shields are available in three different styles, like the larger-sized shields, and in six styles in Enhanced Editions.

Like all standard shields, bucklers offer an armor class bonus of +1. However, because of their marginal size provides, they provide no protection against missile and piercing weapons. So to further clarify, a buckler provides an armor class bonus vs. Slashing and crushing melee attacks, but not piercing or missile attacks. Despite the "no protection from piercing or missile' attacks", your overall Armor Class rating number display on the Character screen will show a +1 bonus to AC when the buckler is equipped.

Description

Buckler

A buckler, also known as a target shield, is a small round shield of wood or metal that fastens to the forearm. Because of its size, it is light and can be worn with very little restriction to movement.
