The Boots of Speed are a possible, defective result of Hoach Randymonk's attempt to repair the Boot and a Half of Speed. They are distinguished from the successful result, The Paws of the Cheetah only by the subtle difference in name.
Description[]
| “ | These boots are made from the tanned hide of an animal such as a horse or a cheetah. They are then enchanted to enable the wearer to move nearly as fast as that animal. Footgear of this sort is prized for allowing one to outmaneuver or even escape one's foes. The boots do not fatigue the wearer beyond what would result from moving at a normal rate.

Gameplay[]
Equipping the boots causes the character to lose control, running rapidly and erratically. Over the next few seconds, they take 20 points of damage (2 x 10), and then collapse as the boots destroyed.
A journal entry is generated:
I should talk to Hoach Randymonk in Bridgefort about a refund.
Hoach Randymonk's Boots of Speed would have been better called Boots of Too Much Speed. Fortunately, no one died. Unfortunately, what's left of the boots is completely useless now.
If the protagonist has Strength 13 or higher, or if Glint is in the party, Hoach will issue a refund. The journal records either:
I managed to secure a refund from Hoach Randymonk for his defective Boots of Speed.
— or —
Thanks to Glint, I was able to secure a refund from Hoach Randymonk for the defective Boots of Speed he sold me.
Exploits[]
Normally the boots self-destruct, making them little more than a joke item. However, if the player interrupts the sequence during the brief moment when control is restored, the destruction script fails. The boots remain equipped and set the wearer's movement rate to 30. Unequipping and re-equipping reactivates script.
This script is present only in Siege of Dragonspear. In an EET setup, if the boots are imported to Shadows of Amn, they lose the bug entirely and function simply as the fastest Boots of Speed available.
Like The Paws of the Cheetah in Enhanced Editions, the Haste effect doubles the speed granted by these boots. But unlike the Paws, they can be used with spells and items that include the Free Action effect, such as Edventar's Gift. They must be equipped after free action has been applied for the character's movement speed to remain at 30. Haste must be applied before free action for 60.
