Blackmist is a +4 halberd that, in Enhanced Edition, allows the wielder to cast an AoE version of Blindness three times per day. In the Original edition, the spell is single target.

Location[]

Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn[]

The item bestowed is Blackmist.

Description[]

This was the weapon of Dominique Harl, a sightless paladin who frequently traveled Faerûn. When attacked, Dominique would unleash the black mist that is this halberd's namesake, potentially blinding all within 5 feet. This often gave him the advantage, for he lived in darkness all his life, seeing only with the inner light of faith. Dominique eventually fell, his body found in a dark forest, slain by a creature of the night even more at home in the shadows than he.

Gameplay[]

The halberd functions normally as one would expect, inflicting the (piercing or slashing) type upon a successful hit. It strikes as a +4 enchanted weapon, including THAC0 and damage bonuses.

While the weapon is equipped, the wielder can launch a special Blackmist-only blindness effect (it's not a spell nor an innate ability in the game files). The range is 10' and must be aimed at a single target. When the projectile lands on the target it applies a series of internal effect codes in a 5-foot radius on the target and any in the radius (friend or foe).

Magic resistance can block the effects. The internal Power level of the blindness effect is 8, and thus certain spell level protections such as Spell Trap can block the attack on the primary target (but not the other creatures in the AoE). Creatures within the AoE can attempt a Saving throw versus spell to negate the effect.

If the Blindness effect takes hold, it will last for 2 hours. In addition, if the saving throw is missed, the affected creature will display a coloring and lighting effect over their sprite, and the combat log will show the text "blinded". Sound effect also is audible when first blinding the creature, and then another when the spell expires, if applicable.

The effect can be dispelled. A Mirror or reflected Image can prevent the projectile from striking the correct target.

Three of these blindness attack "charges" can be attempted per day, and the item recharges after a normal adventurer resting period.

Bugs[]

As of BG2EE 2.6, Blackmist plays two sounds when blinding a target, but one of those sounds is supposed to be an expiry sound when the blindness wears off. This is identified for correction in the pending Enhanced Edition Fix Pack (EEFP). Ref: (halb06.itm)
