Baldur's Gate Wiki

Black Dragon Breath is an innate ability available to Black Dragons in the game saga, such as Nizidramanii'yt. This innate ability is initiated via internal creature scripting during combat. The purpose of the spell is to apply Acid damage in an Area of Effect to the dragon's enemies.

The ability is uninterruptible and takes almost no time to deploy. The scripted targeting will fire over a selected target area, which is typically within the creature's sight detection range. All creatures in the area of effect are subject to the effects. This breath weapon is a projectile that will burst (similar to a Fireball) and spread in a ring of greenish colored acidic destruction. In addition to the bursting animation, a unique sound effect is also played.

When a dragon deploys a Black Dragon Breath, a blast explodes upon enemies within the AoE who are then subjected to 24d4 Acid damage. A quick reaction Saving throw vs Breath Attack will apply, and a successful save will reduce the damage by half. Perhaps the victim was able to dive aside, roll away from the burst, or raise a shield up to deflect some of the acid spray and mist.

  • Any form of acid protection and or acid resistance will help against the powerful blast. No magic resistance or spell protections such as Globe of Invulnerability can stop the dragon acid.
  • As this acid blast ability has an area of effect, a Reflected Image or Mirror Image illusion won't interact with the spell and offers no protection/decoy capability.

Mod content[]

The Sword Coast Stratagems and Spell Revisions mods have removed the "secondary type" classification of "Magic Attack" and made it "None". This means that certain protective spells such as Spell Shield will no longer interact with it at all and provide no protection against Dragon Breath attacks.
