Barbarian is one of the class kits available to fighters. Compared to standard fighters, barbarians are less disciplined and skilled. They cannot use plate mail or become more proficient than a weapon specialist. On the other hand they move a bit faster, have more hit points and gain some resistance to physical damage at higher levels. They can willingly enter a rage that makes them tougher and stronger, not unlike the berserker kit. Barbarians share the same appearance, level progression, high-level class abilities and stronghold as the fighter class and its other kits.

This class was first introduced by BioWare in Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, and was later ported to Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition by Beamdog. Though a Fighter kit, Barbarian is listed as a standalone class at character creation in the original edition.

Disadvantages[]

  • May not wear armor heavier than splint mail
  • May not exceed Specialization (two slots) in any weapon class
  • May achieve Specialization (two slots) in any fighting style and allocate three slots in Two-Weapon Style
  • May not dual class.

Gameplay[]

The innate ability to rage for +4 Strength and +4 Constitution offers this class some unique benefits and opportunities which other fighters do not have access to. It's a shorter duration Potion of Fire Giant Strength available anytime - or for half-orc barbarians, Cloud Giant Strength. Not only does it increase their melee attack and damage rolls, but also the barbarian's thieving ability by way of bashing.
