Baldur's Gate Wiki

Note: this is content created by the expansion Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast. While it's technically possible to embark on this journey in Chapter Five, some fights on the island may prove too difficult and you may become stuck. Keep a save game around, before leaving Ulgoth's Beard so you can always resume from there and come back at a later time.

To start this quest speak with Mendas at Ulgoth's Beard. This walk-through describes the main line for this quest and the side quests you can pick up on the island. Where possible this walk-through will defer to the side quest.

Start your journey[]

Main article: The Reclusive Scholar

A scholar named Mendas wants to travel the sea in the pursuit of knowledge. He has heard of an island that contains a shipwreck with many riches and artifacts. However, the sea is treacherous and the Merchants' League keep the charts to themselves.

This sets you up for the journey to the Isle of Balduran.

Setting Foot on the Isle of Balduran[]

Upon arriving at the island you will find a child named Solianna. She has a lot to say and add the quest The Mysterious Island, which will serve as a guide for the protagonist's stay here.

She will tell you to speak with Kaishas Gan. In fact, everyone you try to talk to, will tell you to talk to Kaishas. Until you've spoken to her – no one will have anything useful to contribute.

The Southern Part[]

Head Northwest on the Island and walk through the open gate (2974.1710). Head into the Chieftain's House and speak with her. During the conversation she will ask you to help fight off the 'beasts' that threaten them and their leader Karoug, while they build a ship to sail back.

Right outside the chieftain's house stands Maralee who is looking for her child. Outside the gates you can speak with Evalt (2294.2654) who is looking for his missing brother. He may wander around a bit.

If you want to, you can teach five year old Farthing (2130.2247) about the virtues of Veganism, but if you do she won't have much else to contribute at this point and refuse further dialogue. It is better to pretend to be only three. Then she will be your friend and asks you to look for her dolly.

Main article: Delainy's Task

Northwest within the gates (2523.1232) female protagonists can find Durlyle and male protagonists Delainy. The historian Delainy has lost an import relic (a cloak) and wishes to have it returned to her. She is afraid of the beasts outside the walls of the village.

There are some supplies in containers in the huts, silo's and storages and no one cares if you take them. Beware of a few murky ones.

The Northern Part[]

Head north and travel to the next screen. Pretty immediately you'll find a man named Palin. He will ask you to help defeat the monsters, and ask you to follow him if you accept. Then Palin will attack you along with 4 'Wolfweres'. The Wolfwere's are fairly strong so it's advised to buff up before this fight. Palin is in possession of Farthing's Dolly.

Continuing on more North East, you'll run into a woman named Kryla (3161.1996). She tells you a man named Jondal has been ambushed by the wolf men, and if you accept to help her, it will start the quest Jondal's Murder. She will walk slightly up, tell Jondal that she has 'brought him a feast,' and instantly two Wolfweres will jump out and attack your party. Defeating them finishes this quick quest.

There's a house nearby where Kryla and Jondal attacked, inside is a man named Dradeel. Dradeel will tell you about how he and Balduran's Ship was attacked and destroyed, and then also ask you to retrieve his spellbook from the ship's wreckage, beginning the quest Dradeel's Spellbook. In Dradeel's cabin there's a chest, inside there's the holy cloak which you can return to Durlyle to complete Durlyle's Task, and also now pick up the quest Flowers_for_Delainy.

Find a Sirine Queen(205.1210) who has Evalt's Brother's Body, which is needed for Evalt's Missing Brother.

The Ship[]

In the very North East corner of the map you'll find the ship-wrecked ship of Balduran, the Wandering Eye. Inside there are a lot of Wolfweres on Every level. Be wary that some of the containers you can search on the ship are trapped. Make sure to pick up the weapon Werebane for your thief. It is made of silver and is one of the few weapons that can harm Greater Wolfwere and above.

Karoug[]

On the fourth level of the ship you'll find a man named Karoug. who is a Loup Garou. Every dialogue option leads to him and his army of Wolfweres attacking your party. Note that Greater Wolfweres and Loup Garou regenerate their health, and that they are immune to any weapon that is not made of silver. The best tactic to use here is any silver weapon in combination with Magic Missile cast by a Mage or Sorcerer from memory or scroll. Wands cast as a level 1 and won't do a lot of damage. If you only have the Werebane you may need Evermemory to have enough casts of Magic Missile available to end his existence.

Starting the fight starts the quest Karoug and the Wolfweres and defeating them ends it.

I suggest first sending in a rogue in that's invisible and hiding in shadows to grab the Sword of Balduran, as it is also made of silver and very effective against the Greater Wolfwere, and bring it back to your party. Then equip all your silver weapons, cast haste and protection spells, and get ready to take them on. I also suggest drawing the regular Wolfweres down two levels and dealing with them before going in for the Greater Wolfwere.

Note: Grabbing the sword is not an easy task, since the chest itself is trapped and locked and there is a trap right before the chest, so this may take several trips up/down the stairs. It may be more beneficial to get The Burning Earth from Durlag's before embarking on this trip.

Karoug should drop Peladan, who is Maralee's child and you can bring back to Maralee to gain her gratitude. Don't forget to pick up Dradeel's Spellbook which is also located on the fourth floor of the ship.

Back to the Village[]

On your way back to the south of the isle, pass by Dradeel's Cabin to hand him the spellbook.

Return to the village and speak with anyone you still have a quest with – except Kaishas Gan – otherwise you cannot complete the others any more.

The Gift of Lycanthropy[]

Note: After speaking with Kaishas Gan, do not mess around and waste time. You and your party are on a timer that will turn them all into Werewolves. Going straight to the ship should give you enough time. If you wait too long you will not be able to finish this quest as your party will turn and attack.

Once done, speak to Kaishas and she will inform you she intends to trap you here on the island until her mate returns. Also – she has gifted you with the blessing of Lycanthropy.

Outside the gates Maralee will inform you there's a way to escape. There's a secret door that leads to their home below the ground, which in turn leads to a ship ready to sail in a bay that you can take to get home and off the island.

Alternatively Durlyle/Delainy may also approach you and tell you of a way off of the island and it can also be Dradeel (who apparently didn't teleport of the island just yet).

Following any of their instructions you'll find the hut (1882.1296) with the secret door. Go through the tunnels killing any obstacles and picking up some potions. Then make your way to the north east area of it, where the way out is. Once outside Kaishas Gan is guarding the ship and will attack no matter the dialogue options you pick. After defeating her return home using the ship's wheel.

Mendas[]

Upon your return, a man named Baresh will approach you and ask you what happened. As you inform him how you dealt with Kaishas Gan, he will run into the house in a not so good mood.

After this conversation, go inside Mendas' house and he will automatically speak with you, revealing his true identity as Selaad Gan. He and Baresh will then both attack as Loup Garou (Greater Werewolves).

Defeating them will end this quest, along with The Mysterious Island and The Reclusive Scholar.
