Baldur's Gate II Chapter 5 is the fifth part of Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. After rescuing Imoen, you will find yourself in the Underdark, a place where Drow and other races dwell.

The information below is a pointer to further information for chapter 5's content.

Plot recap and entry into the Underdark[]

Gorion's Ward is in pursuit of Irenicus and Bodhi. Clues obtained from Saemon Havarian, statements from Irenicus, as well as the First Journal of Jon Irenicus and Second Journal of Jon Irenicus all point to the underdark as the location of their quarry.

The party eventually transitions to the underdark, from either the portal in the Spellhold Basement or by way of the shaft and Magical Rope in the Underwater City.

Upon the transition, a cut scene plays exhibiting a meeting between Jon and a matron mother of Lolth in Ust Natha. Some insight is gleaned from this in that Irenicus has worked out some kind of alliance with the dark elves in the city.

The party then arrives in the underdark, and shortly after another cutscene movie plays for the beginning of chapter 5, introducing the chapter's plot and a sinister description of the underdark.

Gameplay begins afterwards, and it is up to the party to explore and investigate this strange place and track down Irenicus. For a first-time player, the game does not specify exactly what to do, where to go, or any initial must do actions.

Explore the Underdark - main point walkthrough[]

The party is in pursuit of Irenicus, and has no step-by-step plan to achieve that. This means that in terms of gameplay, the party will have to explore and investigate and respond to new information as they go.

Speak with any non-hostile creatures possible to gain clues and possible side-quest options. These encounters will generate journal entries and a path forward to help accomplish some goals in the furtherance of the main priority to locate Irenicus, and also to find a way out of the underdark.

Note:For details, ambushes and side quests see the Underdark article.

At some point, the party will need to be able to encounter the denizen of the Dark Cave. To do this first visit the Svirfneblin Settlement. Speak with Goldander Blackenrock. Through a service to him or other means, obtain the Light Gem.

Using the Light Gem, penetrate the Dark Cave and hear the majestic dragon's words within. For the most experience and gameplay options accept her task and receive the special enchantment necessary to enter Ust Natha.

When ready enter the drow city. Is Ireicus inside? What about Bodhi?

If the player wishes to avoid any further exploration of the underdark, and skip all the other available side quests and just leave the area - then slay the silver dragon, take the special item she carries and move to the exit gate - defeat the guardians and depart the underdark.

Ust Natha[]

Although not absolutely necessary in order to leave the underdark, the main plot and gameplay offerings hinge on the party getting access to the drow city of Ust Natha.

Note:See the Ust Natha article for details of the how to enter the city, and city details. See Inside the Drow City for details of certain tasks required in Ust Natha. See Recover the Silver Dragon's Eggs article for furtherance of the primary goal for most adventuring parties.

Leave the underdark[]

Eventually, the party will wish to leave the underdark to continue the saga.

The best method is to complete the Recover the Silver Dragon's Eggs questline. This will facilitate an assisted method to leave.

The only other option is to explore the Western Tunnels, find the exit and attempt to open the exit gate. The gate is defended by the Drow gate guardians. If the party doesn't have the drow disguise enchantment, then hostilities will ensue. If the party doesn't have the special item to break the gate wards, then the party can't leave the underdark. If the party does have the drow disguise enchantment, then there are options to bribe, or convince the gate guards to let the party pass through the gate.
