Baldur's Gate Wiki

Athkatla, also known as the "City of Coin", is the capital city of the nation of Amn, on the continent of Faerûn, ruled by the Council of Six.

Athkatla is a city where almost anything is legal, though the Cowled Wizards impose strict laws that limit and/or prohibit the use of arcane magic, going so far as to require arcane magic-users to purchase licenses to cast spells within Athkatla. Anyone who breaks this law might be judged as a "deviant" and can sent to Spellhold, a special asylum for spellcasters (insane or otherwise) or individuals driven mad by magic-related afflictions; otherwise, they are killed on the spot if they resist.

Installation of the Southern Edge mod, which is part of creator Lava DeLVortel's "Athkatlan Grounds" series will add a new area to Athkatla to explore - with a small shop, a temple, a tavern and various characters, some of which might need some help solving their problems, with potential rewards and mini-quests to do for more fun and immersion. The new "district" is now marked on the Athkatla "World Map" view, and a valid travel destination. Read about/download Southern Edge mod here.

Install the Tangled Oak Isle mod, also part of the Athkatlan Grounds series. Accessible from the Athkatla World Map, by bridge or boat, the isle is on the western side of the city. Explore the isle, and help the residents solve an urgent problem, one that the Council of Six and the Cowled Wizards don't have an interest in helping with. Read about/download Tangled Oak Isle mod here.

Installation of the Alabaster Sands mod, another Athkatlan Ground area, adds a new district to the city, the public beach area that can be explored. This area is a valid travel destination on the World Map. There are up to seven quests that can be introduced and investigated from this area. More adventure, plus some beach time for the bhaalspawn. There is a Alabaster Sands walkthrough here on our wiki to check out as well.
