Aslyferund Elven Chain +5 is a piece of enchanted and magical elven chain which has the usual penalties to thieving abilities while providing armor class bonuses of 5, compared with generic chain mail. In addition, it protects the wearer from normal weapons and allows the casting of wizard spells, making it useful for bards and multi-class mages. It can be made by Cespenar during the Throne of Bhaal campaign and is also available for purchase in The Black Pits II: Gladiators of Thay.

While in exile from Myth Drannor, Aslyferund learned the secret of fashioning powerful elven armor by gilding and heavily enchanting normal elven chain. Alas, his refusal to divulge the secret lead to his murder by a rival smith.

Gameplay[]

  • The Aslyferund Elven Chain can't be worn together with a number of other protective items, such as rings or cloaks or amulets of protection.[4]
  • This armor becomes available in Throne of Bhaal, when at this stage in the Baldur's Gate series enemies that are not using magical weapons have become scarce, although yuan-ti and rakshasas still use normal weapons.
  • Picking the Good option in the Test of Fear for the Tears of Bhaal quest will have rendered Gorion's Ward immune to normal weapons innately, making the protection from normal weapons entirely useless to them.
  • Haer'Dalis, Aerie, Jan Jansen, Nalia, and Imoen can use this armor and retain their arcane spellcasting and do benefit from the protection from Normal Weapons. Aerie has no thief skills to penalize, Haer'Dalis has bad pickpocketing anyway, and Jan can increase his skills to compensate at any thief level up.
