The Ashen Scales +2 are enchanted and magical splint mail that can only be obtained if siding with the Shadow Thieves during Chapter 3 of Shadows of Amn. In addition, they can be purchased in The Black Pits II: Gladiators of Thay.

Splint mail is a variant of banded mail in which the metal strips are applied vertically to the backing of chain, leather, or cloth rather than horizontally as in banded mail. Since the body does not swivel in mid-torso as much as it flexes back to front, splint mail is more restrictive in battle.

Statistics[]

Compared to non-magical splint mail, this armor improves the wearer's armor class by two further points, setting it to 2 in general, while protecting against piercing and missile attacks with a bonus of 1 and against crushing with a bonus of even 2. It weighs less than the half of regular splint mail, only 18 lb, but still requires the same strength of 8 to be able to wear it.

It can be worn by barbarians, all fighters except the kensai, paladins, pure rangers and all clerics. In addition, it is allowed for the totemic druid and – in the original Shadows of Amn only – the avenger, the latter being restricted from usage in the Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition.

As with other splint mail, pickpocketing, stealth and casting wizard spells are disabled while wearing it.

Unused references[]

  • The Ashen Scales are referenced in a script, MAGNET.bcs: any character wearing this or any other metal armor would be "magnetized" – affected by a wing buffet – towards a creature named Magnet (PPINVI01.cre), while simultaneously a secret door is unlocked. However, the Magnet does not appear in-game. [citation needed]

Gameplay[]

  • Ashen Scales cannot be worn together with a number of other protective items, such as rings or amulets of protection.[1]

Lore[]

Instead of metal strips, this armor uses wyvern scales bound to a chain backing by means of a magical fire. The resulting armor is ash-gray in color and more flexible than standard splint mail. A ranger, Usher Skacan, made this armor after slaying several wyverns that were killing all the deer and elk in his forest.
