Armor of Faith is a 1st level priest spell. It grants the caster protection from physical, elemental, and magical damage attacks.
Description[]
“ | The caster of the Armor of Faith receives significant protection against melee and magical attacks. This magical armor is a force of energy that absorbs a portion of the damage intended for the caster. At 1st level, the protection is 5%, and every 5 levels of the caster improves this by another 5%: For example, a 20th-level priest would have 25% of their damage "absorbed" if protected by this spell. | ” |
Gameplay[]
The caster applies this spell to self only.
When the spell casting is finished, a brief color fade and a 3D effect (spreading wings) renders upon the caster's sprite, and a text displays reading, <NAME>: Casts Armor of Faith: <RECIPIENT>.
A player character will show an icon (no. 206) titled "Armor of Faith" on their portrait for the spell's duration.
When the spell expires a sound effect audibles to signify the spell's end.
This spell confers damage resistance to the caster, which scales from 5% up to 25% depending on the caster's priest level, in 5% increments for every 5 caster levels.
The spell provides damage resistance reduction against Physical damage, Elemental damage, and Magical damage only.
The only type of damage not influenced/reduced is Poison damage.
This damage resistance is compatible and cumulative with other sources of similar resistance from other spells, equipment, potions etc.
A second application of Armor of Faith isn't "stacked" on the first, the most current spell cast just replaces/refreshes the previous one.
Armor of Faith can be potentially removed by any applicable Dispel Magic source, or by a Breach spell.
Notes[]
- This spell works to reduce Crushing damage, Missile damage, Piercing damage, Slashing damage, Acid damage, Cold damage, Electricity damage, Fire damage, Magical damage, and Stunning/Non-lethal damage.
- Fractional damage is always rounded down, unless it is less than 1, in which case it is rounded up. This can result in disproportionately large reductions against small damage numbers. For example:
- 1 damage to 5% resistance becomes 0.95 damage; rounded up to 1 (no effect)
- 3 damage to 5% resistance becomes 2.85 damage; rounded down to 2 (33% reduction)
- 15 damage to 5% resistance becomes 14.25 damage; rounded down to 14 (6.66% reduction)
- 15 damage to 25% resistance becomes 11.25 damage; rounded down to 11 (26.66% reduction)
- The maximal possible effect is a resistance of 25% (as of Level 20).
- In the original Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal, this spell is cumulative with itself. In the Enhanced Editions, it does not stack with itself.
- The portrait icon and status effect name will be shown as Ghost Armor in the classic game.
- It does provide resistances to Magical Fire and Cold, but these damage types are not used in game and can be ignored, although specific Mod content use these damage types.
Trivia[]
The Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition ruleset has no Priest spell titled Armor of Faith. The nearest equivalent is for worshippers of Shar playing in the Forgotten Realms campaign titled Armor of Darkness. This spell is a creation of the game developers.
