Animal Summoning II is a 5th level priest spell. It summons 1 to 3 Black Bear, Brown Bear, Cave Bear, or panther animal(s) to aid the caster.
This spell is usable by the Beast Master kit as a 2nd level spell.
Description[]
“ | By means of this spell, the caster calls 1 to 3 animals that have 8 Hit Dice or less. The animals summoned aid the caster by whatever means they possess, staying until the spell duration expires. Only normal or giant animals can be summoned; fantastic animals or monsters cannot be summoned by this spell (no chimerae, dragons, gorgons, manticores, etc.). | ” |
Gameplay[]
The caster selects a spot on the area map where the animal(s) will appear and designates it by clicking/selecting the spot with the targeting cursor.
When the spell cast is finished, the creature(s) appear at the designated spot with a rendered summoning graphic taking a few seconds.
The animals will now be available to receive commands from the caster and are classified as "controlled" creatures.
If no orders are given, the summoned help will perform actions according to their very basic AI script.
These beasts are subject to the "summoned creature" limit of 5 per area map - if there are already five such entities present on the map, then this spell will not succeed in bringing on any more.
A summoned animal cannot explore and pierce the "fog of war" - nor can they transition to another area map.
Summoned creatures are instantly destroyed by a Death Spell, or if they are within the area of effect of a Death Fog.
An animal slain in combat will leave a corpse on the map, but if the spell expires, they are "unsummoned" and disappear instead.
- Animal Summoning II summons only various bear or panther creatures.
- Due to how summoning multiple creatures is calculated, the following results are possible:
- 25%: 1× Cave Bear
- 25%: 1× Brown Bear, 1× Black Bear or Panther
- 18.75%: 1× Cave Bear, 1× Black Bear, Panther, or Brown Bear
- 6.25%: 2× Panther
- 6.25%: 2× Brown Bear
- 6.25%: 1× Black Bear, 1× Panther, 1× Brown Bear or Cave Bear
- 4.6875%: 2× Black Bear, 1× Panther
- 3.125%: 1× Black Bear, 2× Panther
- 1.5625%: 3× Black Bear
- 1.5625%: 2× Black Bear, 1× Brown Bear
- 1.5625%: 2× Black Bear, 1× Cave Bear

The Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition Priest spell Animal Summoning II differs in several ways from the BG video game version.
In the PnP ruleset, by means of this spell, the caster calls up to six animals of 8 Hit Dice or less, or 12 animals of 4 Hit Dice or less—of whatever sort the caster names.
Only animals within range of the caster at the time the spell is cast will come. The caster can try three times to summon three different types of animals - The DM must determine the chance of a summoned animal type being within the range of the spell.
The animals summoned aid the caster by whatever means they possess, staying until a fight is over, a specific mission is finished, the caster is safe, he sends them away, etc. Only normal or giant animals can be summoned; fantastic animals or monsters cannot be summoned by this spell.
