Baldur's Gate Wiki

This intricate cloak belongs to Algernon, currently residing at Feldepost's Inn in Beregost. It offers a +2 Charisma bonus to the wearer and the ability to cast Charm Creature once per day.

Algernon's cloak is imbued with magical properties such that the wearer will seem to shine with an inner glow.

— Algernon's Cloak

Algernon pocket

Though obtainable already long before Chapter Five of Baldur's Gate by pickpocketing (or slaying) Algernon in Beregost's Feldepost's Inn, Pheirkas in the northwestern district of the city of Baldur's Gate asks for this cloak. Slaying Algernon will result in a loss of Reputation.

Algernon's Cloak variant of Charm Creature:

  • treated as 3rd level spell.
  • ...does not turn target hostile when the charm wears off.
  • ...affects all creatures without explicit immunity (including enemies unaffected by traditional charms such as many undead); does, however, not bypass magic resistance.
  • ...does not belong to any of the schools of magic and thus is not affected by specialist mage bonuses/penalties.
  • ...has actually a range of 100 ft – not only 40, as stated in its description.

Due to the cloak being set as recharging when drained, but without defining that this is to happen during a rest, it can be practically used indefinitely in the original Baldur's Gate. This is fixed in the Enhanced Edition.
