This quest is given to you by Alatos "Ravenscar" Thuibuld, the leader of the Thieves' Guild, who can be found at guild headquarters in the district of East Baldur's Gate.

Alatos wants you to steal three items needed for the creation of Halruaan Skyships, and gives you a "yes or no" ultimatum. The three items you need to steal are Helshara's Artifact Fragment, Delorna's Spellbook, and Ithmeera's Statue. In the original Baldur's Gate Ithmeera's Statue is incorrectly named Delorna's Statue. If you decline Alatos' offer, continually insult him, or insist that he "should be prepared to pay," Alatos and the entire guild will turn hostile. Choose the following option to accept the job and avoid combat:

"Seems a fairly straightforward bit of burglary, and well within my ability. I accept this challenge, and hope it increases my standing within the guild."

Alatos' reply: "As it should be! Now that you have agreed, the facilities of the guild are at your disposal. Feel free to make use of them, and make your presence known to the other members. You have my permission, so they will be less likely to kill you on sight. As for your mission, you have a tenday to complete it. Informants have told me that the Duchess intends to take possession of the components that tenth day, and the exchange will be hosted by Oberon at his estate. As I see it, you have several options. Directly 'persuade' any of the involved parties to hand over the items, or burgle them out from under their noses. Good luck."

Journal Update: "I have been hired by Alatos Thuibuld to do a bit of burglary. I am to sneak into Oberon's estate and steal several magical components from the three daughters of Shandalar. These components are the ingredients for creating a Halruaan flying ship, and the Halruaans want their secret preserved and the items stolen. Alatos suggested that I either 'persuade'  the daughters to release the items, or spirit them out from under their noses. The items are as follows: a spellbook that outlines the rituals needed, a statuette of indeterminate origin, and a fragment of a powerful artifact. I am to return to the Thieves' Guild when the items are in my possession."

The items are guarded by Delorna, Helshara, and Ithmeera on the third floor of Oberan's Estate in Central Baldur's Gate. You have 10 game days to accomplish this or you will fail the quest and Alatos will rebuke you for your failure the next time you talk to him.

If you enter the premises unarmed (fists selected as weapons with main character) and talk to Glanmarie you can claim to be a servant (dialogue options 'new position' and 'no experience' will do the trick, though she will summon guards if she becomes suspicious). Oberan on the second floor will ignore you, and assume you are new guards if you are armed. On the third floor you will be hailed by one of the three daughters. They will get suspicious of you and subsequently fighting will break out. The three items needed for the quest are stored away in an unlocked vanity in one of the bedrooms. Nobody else in the house will have noticed your violent slaughter of the wizards so you can leave undisturbed.

It is possible to retrieve the items without any killing if you send in somebody using Stealth or Invisibility to pick them up. There is nobody in the room where the items are stored, so you can easily grab them and sneak out again without being spotted. This is useful if you want to avoid angering Shandalar by killing his daughters.

In Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, if your thief is discovered, you can still complete the quest with only a loss of one reputation point. Leave all extra party members outside the Estate. Take your thief and attempt to bypass the sisters' conversation. If that fails and your Stealth doesn't work, allow the combat but do not engage the sisters. Immediately move to the desk and loot it. Then immediately proceed downstairs and exit the Estate. Your party members will attack and kill the sisters, regardless of their alignment. Immediately exit the map to avoid the Flaming Fist and loss of party members with good Alignment. Come back to the map and loot.

Either way, return to the thieves' guild and speak to Alatos again. Alatos will rebuke you if you killed the sisters and use it for justification as Resar removes the items and attacks you for being a loose end. Only Resar will become hostile, as long as you don't hurt any of the thieves during the fighting, and he can be killed without any loss of reputation within the guild.

Notes[]

  • If you completed both quests given to you by Narlen Darkwalk beforehand, he will backstab Resar (in a cutscene) and no fighting will take place. Alatos, confronted with the prospect of mutiny of some of his thieves, will agree to spare you.
  • The 10 day timer only applies if you don't have the three items in your inventory when you speak to Alatos after ten days have past.
  • You can go beyond ten days, still acquire the items (as they don't disappear from the estate after ten days), and speak with Alatos to finish the quest.
  • This quest can be completed up until the moment you enter Candlekeep in Chapter Six.
