Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting is a Wizard spell that causes massive dehydration in every hostile creature within the area of effect.
Description[]
“ | This spell evaporates moisture from the bodies of every living creature within the area of effect, inflicting 1d8 damage per level of the caster. Affected creatures are allowed a Saving Throw vs. Spell for half damage. This spell is especially devastating to water elementals and plant creatures, who receive a penalty of -2 to their Saving Throws. This spell will not harm party members. | ” |
Gameplay[]
The caster selects a point on the area map with the targeting cursor, and when the spell casting is finished it launches a projectile to the designated point whereupon the projectile rapidly expands and implements its own "built in" visual cloud effect on the battlefield, lasting about 1 round.
Any non-caster party creatures in the area of effect will have a graphical lighting effect played over their sprite on the map lasting about 1 second.
The spell exposes non caster party creatures in the AoE to variable Magical damage, depending on the caster's level. A Saving throw vs. Spell by an exposed creature can cut this damage by half.
Magic resistance can potentially block this spell.
This spell scales up to caster level 20, inflicting a maximum of 20d8 magical damage. It's often a popular spell choice for Chain Contingencies.
Despite the in-game description, this spell's internal files do not implement a saving throw penalty to water elementals or plant creatures. Additionally, this spell potentially affects nonliving creatures in the game, such as the Undead or constructs, when it shouldn't.
To defend or mitigate damage from this spell, boost magic resistance, saving throws, use Protection From Magic Energy, or SI Necromancy.
The Cloak of Mirroring will protected the wearer from this spell.
It can be countered by a Zone of Sweet Air effect if timed just right; this is most likely to succeed with a Cleric / Mage using Robe of Vecna to cast instantly.

Trivia[]
This spell was originally published in the "Tome of Magic" for the High-Level campaign book in the Advanced D&D 2nd Edition Wizard Spell listing.
The spell was designed to only affect living creatures, and affected friend or foe in the spell's area of effect - Bioware's interpretation of this Baldur's Gate II wizard spell is implemented differently.
