To begin this quest, Gorion's Ward and party must travel to the town of Ulgoth's Beard, where they will find Ike standing in front of the Ulgoth's Beard Inn offering tours of Durlag's Tower. He charges the party 60 to provide the tour. After accepting the payment, he heads towards the Inn and disappears.
“ | Ahh, good people of noble blood who would throw down the gauntlet in the face of chance! Come see the lengths a man must go to protect what's his. A special package deal of 60 gold for your entire group, not that you would need a discount. | ” |
When the party arrives at Durlag's Tower, they'll find Ike waiting on a stone bridge that is located just past the first gate of the entrance way to the tower. Upon speaking to him, he will berate the party for being late and then head off towards the main entrance.
“ | 'Tis about time you got here! I'll wait no longer! The others are already inside! If you don't follow me now, you forfeit your deposit! The tour will not be delayed for you! Now, let us get on with it. | ” |
Speaking to him again will begin the tour. He'll start talking about the history of the tower and the enormous fortune located within before heading inside. Moving inside to the ground floor, the party will find Ike along with several tourists standing in the foyer.
He must then be spoken to four more times. Each time Ike will provide more insight into what caused the tower's eventual decline, the magical wards Durlag installed within the tower to protect himself, and even a few sensational examples of the horror's to be found throughout the tower. After the fourth time, one of the tourists will wander off and trigger a silent Flame Strike trap and fry himself.
“ | This chair, once sat in, would deliver an UNHOLY spike to your nether regions. IMAGINE the EXCRUCIATING SURPRISE of the UNWARY! Durlag went to lengths heretofore UNKNOWN to keep out intruders! | ” |
The final time Ike's spoken to, he will offer for 300 what he claims to be is a true wardstone that will give the party access at least as far down as the third level of the dungeon. Whichever dialogue option you pick as a response, they will all end with the Demon Knight teleporting into the foyer and killing Ike and the tourist with fireballs. So you cannot lose any money as Ike will simply drop anything you gave him, including the wardstone if you did not purchase it. At this point the quest ends.
Note[]
- The main objective of this quest is to provide you with some initial background on the history of the tower as it relates to the Durlag's Tower (quest). No experience or rewards, besides the gold found on the corpse of Ike, is obtainable.
- Also there will be no finished quest entry when Ike and the tourist are killed. The quest name disappears from the quest page in your Journal.
- If you kill the Demon Knight before talking to Ike and taking the tour, once you start the tour, no Demon Knight will appear after Ike offers you the wardstone and Ike and the remaining tourists will just stand there and do nothing.
- In Tales of the Sword Coast, killing the Demon Knight was possible via the casting of Greater Malison, followed by usage of Wand of Paralyzation or other methods that incapacitated the Demon Knight before he teleports out. This possibility has been circumvented in the Enhanced Edition by the Demon Knight's magical resistance. The tourists, however, will still wander around triggering silent floor traps and killing themselves with fire.
